An invitation to empty
For women aged 40+ tomorrow
As I prepare for our end of year reflection gathering tomorrow (details below), I am remembering a friend who recently shared that as this year comes to a close, she is feeling empty. Not empty as in drained or depleted, but after a year of living a life of relative simplicity, she is connected to a sense of inner spaciousness.
What a contrast - I imagine - to how so many of us feel.
Perhaps you too.
This word empty is still reverberating inside me.
Now that I no longer have the rhythm of a menstrual cycle, I am drinking in all the permission this Winter Solstice portal offers… slowing down, softening. In my meditations, I picture the quietest, darkest places on our planet that I can possibly imagine: pitch black, wave-lapped shorelines on uninhabited islands in the Artic Circle, the silent glide of owl wings over crystalline snow, sleeping whales, untouched caves, deep in the belly of the earth.
These images are my medicine, and I let them seep into the stretched and frazzled places inside me, creating space, slowly emptying myself.
I’m so far from feeling called to create grand visions or come up with shiny, ambitious New Years intentions. But there is a longing to create shared, ritualised space to digest and to empty: to give our bodies space to unwind, to acknowledge the year we’ve had - the overwhelm, the beauty, the ache, the confusion, the ways we’ve been invited to transform, who we are in our becoming - and to do this in togetherness.
Perhaps, like me, you feel an increasing urgency that the world doesn’t need us to continue the status quo and to continue being busy, running around frazzled. It asks that we listen and that we tend to the soil of our being. That we are radically honest with our priorities.
We carry so much in this phase of our lives, as women in midlife…often quietly, invisibly. So much vulnerability, so much strength…and so much opportunity as we get to define this time for ourselves like no other generation before us.
And so - if you’re also feeling the calling to use these special days in the lead up to a new calendar year for slowing down, digesting, emptying and reflecting - this is a gentle womb- and heartfelt invitation to join myself and my dear friend and colleague Maya Puig, tomorrow, Sunday for Wintering.
This will be a gentle space for journaling, guided meditation, sharing in pairs and circle-time. And an invitation to bring our curiosity around what themes and what medicine we might carry for each other, as we gather together to slow down and receive the wisdom of this time.
